Preparedness and Emergency
Preparedness and emergency are underlying components to our operating safety program activities. We have 67 emergency workers whom are trained to address potential emergencies in an effective manner. Working together with local government bodies, we identified and planned scenarios to ensure accuracy of coordination of tools and personnel in addressing potential emergencies. Drills, community education, and regular coordination meetings help us develop the knowledge and skills required to manage any emergency situation in order to protect our employees and communities living in the surroundings of our operating sites.
Emergency Response Group (ERG) for emergency response professional assistance
Broader Corporate Function
The Freeport Indonesia emergency response group (ERG) often provides professional emergency assistance that goes beyond its geographical project boundaries. In 2010, three natural disasters hit Indonesia: flooding in Wasior, West Papua; an erupting volcano in Yogyakarta, and the tsunami in Mentawai. They claimed hundreds of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of others. Not long after the disasters occured, the ERG team would arrive on site to deliver evacation assistance and do search and rescue operations. The team also distributed corporate assistance, namely emergency needs such as clothing, foodstuff and water, and facilitated medical teams with reaching disaster victims. In recent years, the ERG has been awarded various awards because of its efforts.
The Emergency Response Group Continues Its Winning Streak
For four consecutive years, i.e. 2008 to 2011, the emergency response group (ERG) of Freeport Indonesia had won the annual Indonesia Fire & Rescue Challenge. Furthermore, six members of the ERG team received their service wings from the National SAR Body for their roles in search and rescue operations following the crash of the Pilatus Porter airplane in April 2009 over Mount Gergaji, Papua. After the pinning ceremony, Solihin, Freeport Indonesia Industrial Safety and Health Manager, commented, “The team’s efforts have been in step with Freeport Indonesia’s commitment to contribute and to give back to the community. The ERG team will continue to strengthen its professionalism.”
